Abstract
Did Classical Islam discuss freedom? Certainly yes, but not in the disciplines one would instinctively think of. The debate was generally shaped in theological terms: Are human being free or are they predestinated by God? Christians took part in it. After the failure of the liberation attempts started in the Nahda period (e.g. the Syrian al-Kawākibī), it is time to take up this conversation once more.
