Abstract

This paper aims to understand if Walter Bagehot (1826-1877) can be placed in the group of authors considered the «anticipators» of the classical elite theory. In particular, the essay will highlight the dual declination with which the theme of the elite is dealt in two of his important works: The English Constitution and Physics and Politics. Despite the lack of a systematic approach to raising doubts about the full acceptability of this hypothesis, the importance of the analyzes that this Victorian thinker dedicates to the elites is undeniable, especially in relation to their presence in a society that began to be influenced by democratic principles.
