Abstract
Voegelin’s effort to recover the reality of history overcoming modern aporias is deeply indebted to Augustine’s conception of historia sacra and to Plato’s ontology. The article shows this dependence focusing on Voegelin’s late essay What is History, where he analyses the practice of historiography. It is part of a monographic issue of the Hermenuetische Blätter dedicated to Geschichtsdeutung
