Abstract
the history of the German language and culture is presented and discussed with a particular attention to the variety of written traditions. The historically motivated phonetical differences between High and Low German are then described by means of texts coming from contemporary dialects. In this way a new method in the teaching of the history of language is elaborated in which contemporary materials are used to help students understand phonetic facts of Medieval German dialects.
