Abstract

Intergenerational relationships have gained a prominent place in the public discourse and in social science research in the last years. This chapter concentrates on the role of the family as the primary socialisation agent and place where the intergenerational transmission of values occurs, especially focusing on adolescence. After a brief overview of psycho-social research concerning the process of intergenerational value transmission within the family as well as its outcomes – often measured as parent-child value similarity –, the authors suggest an alternative view by introducing the concepts of “choice” and “continuity”.
