Abstract
One of the main problems facing the Italian National Health Service is the acquisition and allocation of
resources. It is therefore essential to make rational choices regarding the new opportunities of vaccine
prevention and the efficient allocation of financial resources. This implies the need to carry out global evaluations
by means of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) technique. Within the framework of a PRIN
2009 project “Vaccines: new technologies and new applications. Evaluation of the impact of the vaccines
recently introduced into regional prevention plans and future prospects”, two HTA programs are foreseen
with regard to the prevention of invasive diseases caused by Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus
pneumoniae, in that new vaccines are available and others are in the authorization phase.
The results yielded by these two HTA programs will be very useful to stake-holders and decision-makers,
and will enable the most effective vaccine strategies to be drawn up.
