Abstract

A short account is given of how Soviet linguistics had been interpreted by Italian linguists from the late 40s onwards. Eugenio Coseriu's contribution is also taken into account here, as he had lived in Italy in the 40s and he had done a lot of research in Milan. His considerations about the late Marr School were neglected by several Italian scholars, although Coseriu had anticipated many results in the succeeding research. In particular, he recognized that Meshchaninov's grammatical model was based on methods of analysis that were similar to those used by Glossematics. Coseriu's contribution was then developed by Eddo Rigotti, who reconstructed both the theoretical and the epistemological foundations of Shaumyan's, Mel'chuk's and Revzin's mathematical models of language, which represent the legacy of Soviet structuralism.
