Abstract
Joachim of Fiore’s figures (figurae) may be related to the category of\r\nimages modern historiography uses to define «visual exegesis». This article\r\nanalyzes some characters of this system of representations and offers examples\r\nthat are contemporary to the Calabrese abbot. The meanings of figurae\r\nare explored in light of the specific hermeneutics of Joachim of Fiore’s theology.\r\nParticular attention is dedicated to the Liber figurarum by showing its\r\nspecificity and problems. The investigation focuses on images of trees, especially\r\non those that are called «genealogy trees». Finally, the article compares\r\nsome texts of Joachim of Fiore and the figures with the aim of locating\r\ntheir interpretation in the framework of the development of his thought.
