Abstract
The essay analizes a particular aspect of Anglo-Vatican ties: the diplomatic relations question. In particular, after an historical introduction, it examines the period from 1957 to 1982 on the basis of the Cabinet Papers, an unpublished documentary source made available by the National Archives on its website. The entire analysis is realized in the awareness that, as Blessed John Paul II told Queen Elizabeth II in 2000, «Through that long history, relations between the United Kingdom and the Holy See have not always been untroubled; long years of common inheritance were followed by the sad years of division. But in recent years there has emerged between us a cordiality more in keeping with the harmony of earlier times and more genuinely expressive of our common spiritual roots».
