Abstract
Ottavio Scarlattini (1623-1699), a learned Bolognese clergyman, authored many books on various subjects. Among his works the treatise L’Huomo, e sue parti (Man and its parts), published in 1683, achieved a European level success, thanks to a Latin translation. A few years before, Scarlattini printed a large book in defence of Epicurus’s philosophy; he claimed that this philosophy had been badly misunderstood over the centuries, and that Epicurus’s true doctrine is very different from subsequent deformations.
