Abstract
The essay reviews some of the most important studies published in the past two decades on the history of Eastern dissent and its reception in the West. What emerges is the variety of ‘forms’ in which dissent was expressed within communist regimes between the 1960s and the 1980s. Moreover, historiography has highlighted the role of dissent in the dialogue between civil societies on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
