Abstract
The only legitimate source of authority in Islam is God. How is this principle translated into practice after Muhammad's death and the end of prophecy? The chapter discusses, in two separate parts, the Sunni construction of a diarchy between military rulers and ulama (M. Brignone), and the Shi'a emphasis on the figure of a divinely guided Imam--by arguing that the Shia doctrine is an archaism and not a late doctrinal development--and its gradual replacement by a hierarchical clergy (M. Diez).
