Abstract
Because of its strategic geographical location at the crossroads of Caspian, Middle Eastern and Eastern Mediterranean gas-rich countries and Europe, Turkey has progressively emerged in the international political, economic and energy debates as a potential key regional gas hub. In particular, this point is often raised in the discussion concerning the rise of Turkey as a leading regional power and in the debate about the future prospects of the EU-Turkey relations. However, by going beyond the political slogans and by focusing on the concrete gas realities around Turkey this picture could be seriously put into question. This volume seeks to provide a contribution to the current debate by providing a realistic assessment of the potential role of Turkey in the regional gas markets, beyond the mainstream rhetoric.
