Turkey in the Eyes of the GCC Countries Looking at the Mediterranean

Abstract

The deep rooted historical, cultural and religious ties between the Arabs and Turkey are more and more often advocated nowadays as the basis on which the GCC States and the Republic of Turkey are re-structuring and strengthening their relations with the clear aim to enhance cooperation in the economic, commercial, political and cultural fields. The GCC countries seem to look at the so-called neo-Ottomanism as more an opportunity than a threat. This essay regards the peculiar cultural/political dimensions of this crucial relationship, the growing projection of the GCC States towards the Mediterranean and the need to create triangular synergies with the EU.
