Abstract

Since 2021, the Università Cattolica of Milano (Department of Archaeology, History and History of Art) has been conducting a research project aimed at identifying and analyzing traces of painting and gilding on marble and stone architectural\r\ndecorations found in Northwestern Italy. The research carried out up until now has focused on various sites in Northwestern Italy: four cities (Cremona, Milano, Novara and Tortona) and a villa (the “Grotte di Catullo”) in Sirmione. Discoveries of\r\narchitectural elements – such as columns, half pilaster capitals, and cornices – that still retain traces of painting and gold leaf have been made
