Abstract

The chapter outlines the social and political profile of the palatine 'notarii' of the Valentinian emperors (AD 364-392) with a focus on: a) the differences between East and West; b) the role of Valentinian I's court for the constitution of a new group of 'notarii' whose work was promoted in relation to the institutionalization of the 'consistorium'; c) the different models embodied by Leo, Fl. Syagrius, and Fl. Neoterius.
