Abstract

The metaverse, which is “a post-reality universe, a place where physical reality and digital virtuality mix,” offers new ways to learn that are very exciting. The metaverse technology has several features that can be used to learn and teach in a way that is immersive and hands-on. It can keep people interested in the content, allow for real-time social connections, and make learning more active. It also lets us navigate some of the problems with traditional education, such as being stuck in one place and not being able to personalize or work together. With the metaverse, learning can be more interactive, personalized, and team based. How can we make learning the best it can be in the Metaverse? How do the unique parts of the metaverse, such as immersion, affect learning and emotions? Can we come up with rules for how to make the Metaverse a good place to learn online? The META Learning Project will attempt to answer these research questions and to contribute to defining the elements of a “Metaverse-powered online distance education.” The project will be implemented at the Research Center in Communication Psychology, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan, Italy; https://centridiricerca.unicatt.it/psicom) in collaboration with Ernst & Young Business School (Rome, Italy).
