Abstract
William Butler Yeats gathered many travel books of different kinds and worth in his library. These books witness his interest both in the real experience of travel and in the infinite actualizations of its symbolic value, which he materialized in his poetic texts at various textual levels and according to diverse cultural perspectives. This essay intends to show how Yeats applied the symbolic value of travel (with its synonyms) and its anthropological and epistemological implications to his own country, to the “philosophy” and practice of the poetic text, and, more generally, to the idea of adopting “the living world for text”.
