Abstract
AgrowingnumberofCompaniesisnowadayscommittedtoevaluatetheimpactoftheirproduction,drivenbydifferentforcesasthegrowingdemandforgreenproductsbythemarketandthepressurefromtheInstitutionsinpromotingamoresustainableproductionandconsumptionmodel.
Environmentalassessmentandcommunicationarestrictlyrelated.Aproperenvironmentalcommunicationstrategyisnecessarytoallowmoreinformedchoicesandtoencouragethegrowthofa"greenmarket".
ConsideringthatinEuropethefoodsectoraccountsfor20%-30%ofallenvironmentalimpactsfromconsumptions(ESTOandIPTS,2006),consciousproductschoicescanleadtoasignificantreductionoftheenvironmentalpressurecausedbythissector.
Consideringtheexpansionofthegreenmarketandthegrowingimportanceofenvironmentalinformationinthefoodsector,in2012theEnvironmentalLabelforfoodwasbornbytheinitiativeoftheItalianConsultancyCompanySPRIMandtheInstituteofAgrarianandEnvironmentalChemistryoftheUniversitàCattolicadelSacroCuore(Piacenza,Italy).
Thelabel,simpletounderstandbyconsumers,hasbeendesignedtobeplaceddirectlyonfoodpackaging,inordertoallowcomparisonbetweenproductsand,consequently,tosupportmoreinformedchoices.Areportaboutthecalculationisavailableonthewebsite.
