N2 - Odysseus’s encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus is one of the best-known episodes of the Odyssey today and it was very popular in antiquity as well. This contribution will focus on the geographical setting of the episode from a diachronic perspective: while in the Odyssey the location of the Cyclopes’ land remains undetermined, from the 5th century onward it was consistently identified with Sicily. The geographical features of this Western setting will be explored through various literary texts, with the aim of emphasizing the relationship between these features and the portrayal of the Cyclops.
