The Baluch role in the Persian Gulf during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Abstract

The movements of the Baloch from South Central Asia southwards, and their relationships with the Gulf region during the 19th and 20th centuries were local, regional, periodic, and temporary, as well as long distance, international and global throughout Central Asia, the Gulf, and the Indian Ocean down to Eastern and Central Africa. For a long time, available literature on this particular subject - not generous at all on this topic - did show the Baloch as a monolithic group of people, migrated in search for a better life, recruited mainly as troops to Arabia and to East Africa, and outwardly framing them in a sort of static social, political and economic picture; therefore, the main causes of the Baloch movements through multilocal and trans local realities in the Gulf region led to the gradual composition of their identity, essentially a cultural identity.
