Abstract
In assessing the effects of climate change policies, economists use the social discount rate, with
an implicit assimilation of a collective choice involving several generations, to the intertemporal
allocation of consumption of a single infinitely lived individual. The higher the discount rate,
the more the future damage of climate change is dwarfed. This is opposed to the notion of a
common good involving future generations.
