Sport, social inclusion and community development: an experience in Cape Town (South Africa)

Abstract

This presentation analyzes an experience that uses the sport and physical activity as a tool for social inclusion and community development. The project is carried out in the neighborhood of Manenberg in Cape Town (South Africa) and it was born from the collaboration between several partners: the Foundation Champions for Children, the Catholic University of Milan , the Ramon Llull University of Barcelona. and a local network. The project consists in the construction and manage of a Playground, a socio-field sports, which has become a community gathering point. A multipurpose facility that, through sports activities, become a space to develop social networking community. In the first part of the communication will provide data that can shape the social demographic, cultural and economic situation of Manenberg district, establishing most relevant social issues. The second part shows the theoretical and methodological frame of the project . Thirdly, a protocol of co-action with local partners. . Finally, it will show some results and reflects on strengths and limits of this project .
