Abstract
We investigate a relationship between topological insulators and spin structures on Riemann surfaces, along with their theta function interpretation, via Quillen's determinant bundle.\r\n The genus one case is analyzed in detail and it is found to yield a non trivial Kane-Mele type invariant.
