Abstract

Over the past two decades, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok have revolutionized the sports industry, enabling athletes, teams, and fans to engage in unprecedented ways. This essay explores the intersection of social media and extreme sports, focusing on how digital technologies are reshaping the representation, experience, and identity of action sports communities. By examining the role of theory in social media and sport studies, the paper highlights the importance of theoretical frameworks in understanding the complex dynamics between these two domains. The study delves into the impact of new media technologies, including GoPro cameras, drones, and GPS tracking devices, on the embodied experiences of action sports participants and the global dissemination of extreme sports culture. It also discusses the digitization of action sports bodies, emphasizing how wearable technologies and self-tracking devices are transforming the way athletes and audiences perceive and interact with these sports. The essay concludes by advocating for the continued development and application of theory in this interdisciplinary field, offering insights into how advanced methodologies and theoretical perspectives can deepen our understanding of the evolving relationship between social media and extreme sports.
