Abstract
The essay is meant as a contribution to the reconstruction of Giuseppe Sarto’s Mantuan stay (1894-1896), by presenting several little known documents concerning the bishop’s thoughts on sacred music. During the years of the Cecilian movement, through contacts with musicians like Lorenzo Perosi and Giovanni Tebaldini, Sarto developed a series of norms which eventually flowed into the Motu Proprio of 1903, which bore his signature as pope Pius X
