Abstract
Hints for consider again technology transfer
Proceeding from the chapter “De furnum” of the Memoratorio de mercedes Comacinorum ( 713-735 a.D.) the Author offers in this paper an analyse about each structural elements and particulary about caccabi used in vaulted structures.
The use of hollow terracotta vaulting tubes or ollae/ caccabi or amphorae has long been known and studied, but is possible for the Author to do many other remarks abouth origin of this peculiar building method. That especially considering hers studies of embedded-amphorae structures, a building technique to reclaim land and improve geotechnical and hydraulical conditions. The paper describes in details and throught many cases and arguments the fil rouge connecting the use of “hollow terracotta elements”. Amphorae, tubuli, caccabi are indeed all “hollow elements” light, examples of engineering applied in domus, bath-house, public buildings or of geology applied for reclaiming system, in a chronological period longer than you can imagine (suppose).
Some tables bring up to date, make a synthesis of italic land and support comparisons.
If we agree to this proposal ( this thesis), then vaulting structure of a kiln witch Memoratorio describes is a long long way technical and the first use of vaulting tubes is not only from Africa Proconsularis in the course of the 2nd c. a.D.. Into these view we can place the magistri commacini, her builder. The Memoratorio concern those technician, so heirs of ancient knowledge enforced from late republican to imperial times, though the earliest examples are from the greek world.
