Abstract
As the data show, Italy has for years been characterized by evident linguistic,\r\ncultural and religious diversity. This pluralism is certainly a resource in\r\nthe public sphere, but it also poses many challenges in terms of reception,\r\npolicies, education, dialogue and, ultimately, mutual understanding and\r\nknowledge. What is needed fi rst and foremost, therefore, is the deconstruction\r\nof stereotypes and prejudices, which can inevitably limit encounters with\r\nothers, or even prevent them, by generating misunderstandings and defensive\r\nattitudes. In particular, this contribution explores the Islamic presence,\r\nespecially in educational contexts, and highlights the importance of encounter\r\nand dialogue as a means of confl ict prevention and peacebuilding.
