Abstract
In 1983 Roberto Sanesi published a very small volume entitled Il Risveglio di Finnegan, the translation of the first three pages (593-595) of Finnegans Wake's Book IV.
The same text, almost identical, had appeared the year before in a literary review.
This was, and still is, the first Italian translation of this part of FW and it curiously appeared when Mondadori published the first volume (Book I, chapters I-IV) of the official translation of FW by Luigi Schenoni.
This paper does not set out to analyze Sanesi's practice of translation in technical terms, it rather tries to envisage the progression of an artistic path which led him to approach Joyce's work as something he felt very close to his own poetics.
