Abstract
Starting from a fundamental historical phase - the one from 1949 to 1978 - to highlight some stylised facts of that first thirty years of the People's Republic of China, the work looks at China 'opening its doors' and how it is rather quickly gearing up to fully enter the globalised world. It then considers some of the country's most recent strategies to mitigate internal inequalities with a view to sustainable development. Indeed, there are several ways in which China is now preparing for its goal of becoming a leader by the centenary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 2049. Beyond the pursuit of technological leadership, two areas are crucial for Chinese development at this stage: that of reducing internal inequalities and that of the sustainability of the secondary sector
