Abstract
Considering Sgualdi's political thought, we surely can look upon it as a typical step of the development of a Cassinese way of thinking during the 17th century about the matter of the 'ragion di stato'. Nevertheless, his many ponts of contact with different cultural areas (in Venice, Genoa and Bologna, for example) show how rich were influences on and of his intellectual work, which had, however, strongest roots in last 16th century teachings, mostly in an Angelo Grillo's incentive inside the Cassinese congregation and in Giusto Lipsio work as a general term of comparison.
