Abstract
In this essay the Author provides an overview of Sources and Bibliography (status quaestionis). The historical analysis focuses on crown Courts, judges and their police forces in Austrian Lombardy (that is to say Milan and Mantua States under Habsbourg rule). Eventually, it depicts the range of the crimes and of the punishments inflicted, before and after 1784-1786, when Emperor Joseph II abolished torture and capital punishment, restructured Courts and adopted a new regulation for criminal trials.
