Abstract
The Romans sincerely believed they were the most pious men in the world and
owed their hegemony to their special relationship with the gods: so they felt in deep
distrust facing the Hellenistic world, where there was not any religious unity and
where philosophical scepticism mixed with the cult of the rulers as gods: so religion
could not be an element of mutual understanding between the Roman rulers and
their Hellenistic subjects.
