Abstract
The "Cassetta dei morti" comes from an ancient religious tradition: the inhabitants of Campodolcino Val Chiavenna - valley in the Alps - gave donations to a "fund". The proceeds of which were used for the souls of the "dear departed" and for actions of charity. With the intervention of some figures the institution is transformed into an association to provide for certain requirements of the community such as education or the provision of credit. This identity implicitly gave the "Cassetta" a nature of civil institution of the territory: an expression of the will to "adjust" some aspects of civil economic. In the same time it was a means of direction and control of the social structure and economic system.
