Abstract
This review examines Adrien Candiard’s Du Fanatisme: Quand la religion est malade (2020), which explores the theological roots of religious fanaticism. Candiard argues that fanaticism stems not from an excess of religion but from its absence, where God is replaced by rigid dogma. Drawing on his expertise in Islamic theology, he highlights how certain theological traditions prioritize divine law over a relational understanding of God, fostering an environment where violence appears justified. The book offers a rare theological perspective on radicalization, proposing three remedies: theological inquiry, interfaith dialogue, and deepened spirituality.
