Abstract
In "Il santo peccatore" (1995), Crovi gives voice to the revolt of conscience that in Italy gave rise to a vast moral and political reaction against the rampant corruption and social decay. The essay shows both the historical context and the literary sources Crovi makes free use of in shaping Aronne Scotti, the unusual character of his novel. It also points to the cultural, ecclesiastical, and hagiographic archetypes, which are at the roots of the direct activities of social and humanitarian gestures Aronne took up together with his followers.
