Abstract
Rather than geographic places far from the city center, suburbs can be defined today as areas where critical situations and environmental and social conflict concentrate, but where, at the same time, changing energies circulate.
In this in-transition scenery, the volume presents a research work through six districts of Milan, aimed to interpret the trajectories of the areas’ development, by considering all the actors involved: from the most visible ones, who often come from outside to upset the status quo (from politicians to creative people, to immigrants), to the components of the consolidated urban fabric (middle class, small businessmen, artisans, traders), who are rarely the object of media’s attention.
Through this path, the change manifests itself as the result of a network of situated and local relationships whose effect is also evident on a global scale.
