Abstract
The present study considers the relationship between higher education and
psychological professions on account of a recent (2012/13) survey conducted in
Italy on a representative sample (n = 1500) of psychologists enrolled in their professional
association. Reasons that are associated both to psychology (first of all,
the increase of the professional community) and to the socioeconomic context enhance the need of a closer link between education and profession. In response to
this need, results show a clear gap between expectations and reality in academic
education: both at second-level (master’s degree), at third level (graduate schools,
masters, PhD) and at the transition between education and profession (training/internship).
We provide some suggestions for an agenda aimed at creating a
stronger synergy between profession and higher education in psychology
