Abstract

This paper concerns a matter of performance practice: the use of the terms spartire/partire in the second half of the XVI century, as contained in a piece of sacred music, found in a document kept in the archive of the palatine basilica of S. Barbara in Mantua. The essay analyzes the role played by the organ (an instrument which, in the Mantuan basilica, features split keys, particularly suited for the accompaniment of voices) and the musical novelties of that period
