Abstract

Sosia’s speech in the Amphitruo (vv. 186-262) is one of the best example of Plautus’s parodic art. The verb obtruncare at v. 252 (ipsusque Amphitruo regem Pterelam sua optruncavit manu) sounds like a hint at the military custom of the obtruncatio of prisoners by some of the most famous Roman duces.
