Abstract

The story of Zonaras on the ascent of the Emperor Tacitus glimpse of an origin and a career other than those celebrated by the Latin historiography of the fourth century. And the comparison with the inscriptions, coins with the legends about the third consulate and a portrait by Laus Pompeia allows us to formulate the hypothesis that the Emperor Tacitus was born in a province such as Noricum, was a dux of equestrian rank and perhaps praetorian prefect Aurelian before becoming a senator and consul in 273 AD
