title = "On the Goals of an Ancient Metalinguistic Source. Hesychius and the Aristotelian σαφήνεια",
abstract = "[Autom. eng. transl.] In the dedicatory letter placed before his Lexicon, Hesychius inserts a declaration of method and purpose. Behind the apparent banality of the Hesychiian formulation we can see the legacy of previous linguistic reflections. A fundamental piece is constituted by the ancient rhetorical theorizing, and in particular by Aristotle, to whom the prescription of σαφήνεια as a virtue of comprehensible speech and the roots of the reflection on homonymy and ambiguity of the speech refer. In setting the 'clarity' of words as an objective, the Esichian lexicon intends not only to offer itself as a support tool for reading, but also as a tool that in some way increases or replaces the direct experience of the language, increasing linguistic, empirical competence, of its user.",
