Abstract
Prevalence of diabetes was 8.3 % in 2013 and projections estimate that it will be\r\n10.1 % in 2035.\r\nIn 2013, 382 million people had diabetes; in 2035, they could be 592 million.\r\nThe number of people with diabetes is increasing in every country.\r\nAlmost half of the people with diabetes are undiagnosed.\r\n5.1 million people died due to diabetes in 2013.\r\nDuring 2013, about US$ 548 billion were spent on health care for diabetes.\r\nManagement of the disease is not optimal and does not reach many, perhaps the\r\nmajority, of the people who could benefit.\r\nThere is now extensive evidence on the optimal management of diabetes, offering\r\nthe opportunity of improving the immediate and long-term quality of life of\r\npatients and avoiding complications which are major causes of early death in\r\nmost countries.\r\nSeveral programs have been launched worldwide and they could help managers\r\nand clinicians for the prevention and management of the disease.
