Abstract
The near-field electromagnetic distribution arising from the light scattering of a large dielectric microsphere is discussed in the framework of the Mie theory. Particular attention is devoted to the formation of photonic nanojets. We aim to characterize the conditions to exploit the microsphere as probes for surface-sensitive spectroscopy and imaging applications.
