Abstract
Objective. Today the Italian national debate over
the Work-Related Stress Risk Assessment methodology is rather
heated. Several methodological proposals and guidelines have
been published in recent months, not least those by the
“Commissione Consultiva”. But despite this wide range
of proposals, it appears that there is still a lack of attention to
some of the basic methodological issues that must be taken into
account in order to correctly implement the above-mentioned
guidelines. The aim of this paper is to outline these
methodological issues. Methods. In order to achieve this,
the most authoritative methodological proposals and guidelines
have been reviewed. The study focuses in particular
on the methodological issues that could lead to important
biases if not considered properly. Results. The study leads
to some considerations about the methodological validity
of a Work-Related Stress Risk Assessment based exclusively
on the literal interpretation of the considered proposals.
Furthermore, the study provides some hints and working
hypotheses on how to overcome these methodological limits.
Conclusions. This study should be considered as a starting
point for further investigations and debate on the Work-Related
Stress Risk Assessment methodology on a national level.
