Abstract

Starting from the consideration of the importance of the UHDDS, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (in Italy “SDO”), for the description of the hospital inpatients activity (and in particular, to those characterized by intervention or procedure: “surgical” DRGs), the working group has examined the records relating to inpatients admissions in the Italian NHS (years 2010-2011-2012), attributed to the surgical DRGs of MDC 5 (diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular system) from the SDO database of the Ministry of Health (n = 1,080,986). Instead of the usual representation by single DRG (in this MDC, 30 “surgical” groups), we proceeded to the analysis of individual ICD-9-CM procedure (total of 493), obtaining specific profiles “intra-DRG”. In addition to the methodology used, we present the preliminary results related to the DRGs 104-105 (Cardiac Valve Procedures and Other Major Cardiothoracic Procedures with or w/o Cardiac Catheterization), DRGs 110-111 and DRG 479. This research project, which involved professionals and researchers in health care organizations, universities and research is also the first activities of the newly established CIDICS, Italian Centre of Documentation, Information and Coding in Healthcare (www.cidics.it).
