Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) imposes not only physical but also considerable psychological burdens on patients. Anxiety and depression are pervasive, exacerbated by factors like loss of independence, uncertainty about the future, and the struggle to breathe. Consequently, adherence to prescribed therapies often faces obstacles such as forgetfulness and worries. Smoking, responsible for over 70% of COPD cases in wealthier nations, persists as a significant risk factor despite its association with disease progression, warranting preventive and ameliorative interventions. Likewise, physical activity (PA) plays a crucial role in reducing adverse outcomes and extending life expectancy. However, dyspnea frequently limits COPD patients’ PA, leading to sedentary lifestyles. Nutrition also impacts COPD prognosis, with targeted therapies essential for managing involuntary weight loss and muscle atrophy. Moreover, sleep, vital for physical recovery and mental well-being, profoundly influences mood, cognition, and overall quality of life in COPD patients, underscoring its global health implications. Recognizing and addressing these psychological and behavioral factors are pivotal for enhancing patient health outcomes. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted challenges posed by COPD, highlighting the importance of holistic management strategies that encompass psychological support, lifestyle interventions, and targeted therapies to optimize patient care and well-being.
