Abstract
We investigate spatial patterns of vulnerability to transport povertry for Italy. In line with previous research, we define vulnerability as the combination of high exposure (high car use), high sensitivity (low income) and low adaptive capacity (high car dependence). We use municipality-level data on motorisation and the journey to work from the latest Italian Census (2011), combined with official tax revenue data for the same year (as a proxy for income). We compute a composite indicator of vulnerability, and test the sensitivity of the results to weighting and other specifications. The results suggest that within most Italian city-regions there is co-location of low income and car dependence on the urban periphery. Overall, this confirms the need for context sensitivity and attention urban socio-spatial configurations in research on vulnerability to fuel price increases.
