Abstract

At the centre of the essay is the Rotulus preserved in the Archivio Capitolare di Vercelli under the under the shelfmark "Atti Privati, LXXXVII". It is a bundle of documents on the phases of an important trial of the court of Henrich VI between the Bishop of Vercelli Alberto and the commune of Casale Sant'Evasio. The procedural file and other documents have been handed down in the form of certified copies from the middle of the 14th century. have been handed down. The essay attempts to analyse the circumstances of the creation of the copies and the probable assembly of the rotulus. A comparison with the contemporaneous tradition has made it clear that the copied documents were issued in the years 1346/1347 as part of a legal dispute between the commune of Vercelli and that of Casale Sant'Evasio before the Milanese judge Leone da Dugnano. As with other cases in the Vercellese tradition from the 14th century the 14th century, the parchment rotulus is considered the preferred medium for a trial record.
