Abstract

In 1949, four poems by an unknown poet, Paul Celan (German-speaking but of Romanian origin) were published in the third book of the fourth issue of the German magazine Die Wandlung. After receiving the letter with the request for publication, the writer M. L. Kaschnitz, in charge of the literary section of the magazine, immediately recognised the value of the young artist and met him in the editorial office in Paris. A friendship was born between the two that would last until the tragic death of Celan, recognised later as one of the greatest German-language poets. On the basis of a number of published and unpublished documents, it is possible to reconstruct some fragments of the human and poetic bond between these two artists, who had very different backgrounds and literary training, but shared the same poetics.
